WHY IRON FX
What Makes Iron FX Different From a Dedicated Ornamental Shop
Fabricated to Your Specs, Not Chosen From a Catalog.
Iron FX does not sell from a showroom of stock designs. Every piece is fabricated to your opening dimensions, site conditions, and design preferences. You get ironwork that fits correctly the first time rather than something modified to approximate your opening.
Arizona Climate Finishing
All ironwork from Iron FX is finished for the Phoenix climate. That means sandblasting to bare metal, zinc-based primer coat, and powder coating as the standard finish process. Powder coating lasts significantly longer than paint in Arizona’s UV conditions and reduces the corrosion risk from monsoon moisture and irrigation spray.
Licensed, Insured, and ROC Registered
Iron FX Welding holds an Arizona ROC license and carries full general liability insurance for all fabrication and installation work. We provide certificates of insurance before any project begins.
Full Welding Shop Behind Every Project
Because Iron FX is a complete welding operation, we handle ironwork involving structural connections, concrete anchoring, and field modifications that dedicated ornamental shops often subcontract or decline. One call covers fabrication, installation, and any required structural welding.
Repair and Retrofit Work
Most ornamental shops focus on new installations. Iron FX repairs existing ironwork, including cracked gate welds, sagging hinges, bent frames, rusted railings, and misaligned hardware. If your existing ironwork can be restored to a safe working condition, we will tell you that honestly rather than push a full replacement.
10+ Years in the East Valley
Family-owned and based in Mesa. We have installed ironwork at residential properties, commercial facilities, and HOA communities throughout Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, and Scottsdale for over a decade.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Types of Iron
Ornamental Iron, Wrought Iron, and Structural Iron, What Each One Means
This question comes up on almost every iron works project in Arizona, and the answer affects materials, finishing, code requirements, and cost.
Ornamental Iron (What Most Arizona Homeowners Actually Want)
When people say “wrought iron gate” or “wrought iron security door” in Mesa or Phoenix, they almost always mean ornamental iron fabrication. Ornamental ironwork is built from mild steel tubing, flat bar, and formed components that are welded into gates, railings, doors, and fencing. It combines a decorative appearance with functional strength and security. Powder coating is the standard finish. Ornamental iron does not typically require engineered drawings or structural inspections unless it is integrated into a load-bearing structure.
Wrought Iron (Traditional Material, Rarely Used Today)
True wrought iron is a historical material with very low carbon content, worked by hand forging. It is expensive, rare, and labor-intensive. Most products sold and marketed as “wrought iron” in Arizona today are ornamental steel fabrication, not true wrought iron. If you specifically want hand-forged traditional wrought iron for a historic restoration or a high-end architectural feature, that is a different scope and price point than standard ornamental work.
Structural Iron (Engineering-Grade Steel)
Structural iron is actually structural steel used for load-bearing applications in buildings, mezzanines, stair systems, and commercial framing. It is governed by engineering drawings, building codes, and AWS welding standards. Appearance is not the priority. If your project involves a gate post anchored into a building frame, a mezzanine guardrail that is part of a commercial structure, or an entry canopy tied into the building, then the scope crosses from ornamental to structural work. Iron FX handles both, which is uncommon among dedicated ornamental shops.
The practical rule: If it needs to look good and provide security or access control, it is ornamental. If it holds weight or connects to a structure, it is structural. Most residential gate, railing, and security door projects in Mesa are ornamental iron fabrication.

Why Finishing Matters More in the Phoenix Climate
Iron works in Arizona face conditions that accelerate failure in poorly finished metalwork. Understanding the finishing process is the best way to evaluate any iron fabricator before hiring.
UV Exposure:
Mesa averages over 300 days of sun per year. Standard paint applied directly to metal without proper prep will fade, crack, and peel within 2 to 3 years under Arizona UV exposure. Powder coating applied over a properly primed surface holds color and adhesion significantly longer.
Monsoon Moisture and Irrigation:
Arizona is dry most of the year, but the monsoon season brings spikes in humidity and heavy rain. Sprinkler systems run year-round on residential properties. Any bare metal or compromised finish in contact with regular moisture will rust. Applying zinc primer before powder coating creates a barrier that slows corrosion, even if the top coat is scratched or chipped.
Thermal Expansion:
Metal expands and contracts with temperature. Phoenix temperatures can swing from below 40 degrees in winter nights to above 115 degrees in summer. Gates and doors that are not fabricated with appropriate tolerances will bind, sag, or warp over time. Iron FX accounts for thermal movement in every gate and door fabrication.
Iron FX Finishing Process:
- Sandblast to bare metal: removes all mill scale, rust, and contamination
- Zinc-based primer coat: corrosion barrier before topcoat
- Powder coat finish: hundreds of color options, bonds to metal rather than sitting on top
- Hardware installation: stainless or coated hardware to match the finish durability
HOW IT WORKS
Our Iron Works Process
Step 01: Site Visit and Measurements
We visit your property, take field measurements of the opening or installation area, assess any existing conditions (concrete, posts, existing hardware), and discuss design preferences. Quotes are based on actual measurements, not approximations.
Step 02: Design Confirmation and Quote
We provide a written quote with material, fabrication, finish, and installation costs separated. For straightforward projects like a standard gate or railing, the quote is fixed price. For complex or multi-phase projects, we outline exactly what could affect cost before you commit.
Step 03: Fabrication at Our Mesa Shop
All ironwork is fabricated at our Mesa facility. We cut, fit, weld, grind, and finish every piece before it leaves the shop. You are welcome to inspect the work before installation if you want to see it prior to delivery.
Step 04: Installation and Final Inspection
We install at your property, set hardware, test operation, and make any on-site adjustments before we leave. Gates are checked for level, swing clearance, and latch alignment. Railings are checked for post anchor integrity and code height compliance.
PRICING INFORMATION
What Affects the Cost of Iron Works in Mesa?
Iron FX provides written quotes on all iron works projects. Here are the factors that affect final cost so you know what to expect when you call:
Project Type and Size:
A single pedestrian gate costs less than a double driveway gate with automation-ready framing. A single stair railing section costs less than a full balcony perimeter with posts. Scope drives cost more than any other factor.
Design Complexity:
Straight bar and tube construction costs less than scrollwork, decorative infill panels, or custom laser-cut elements. We can match most design styles and will tell you upfront when a design choice adds significant fabrication time.
Material Specifications:
Standard mild steel tubing and flat bar is the base material. Heavier wall thickness, stainless steel components, or aluminum fabrication each add to material cost. We specify what we are using in every quote.
Finish Selection:
Standard black powder coat is included in our base pricing. Custom colors, two-tone finishes, or specialty textures are available at additional cost depending on the powder coat supplier.
Automation Preparation:
We build automation-ready gate frames at no additional charge when requested. Gate opener installation involves electrical work that is coordinated with an automation contractor. We can refer you to a local gate automation installer or coordinate directly if you have one.
Removal of Existing Work:
Removal and disposal of old gates, doors, or railings is quoted as a separate line item. It is not included in fabrication pricing unless specified.
